When Temple Of Doom came out many criticized negatively the violence of the movie. They said that for a film like that a scene where a heart is been removed by a living person and the person continues to live in agony is too much. I on the contrary found that the "spicy" elements of the movie concerning violent images were something that added to the film's undeniable charm and B movie agenda and flavor. Temple Of Doom is the most mistreated Indiana Jones movie and one of the best. I dare to say that I enjoy Temple Of Doom more than Raiders Of The Lost Ark. There is something in this movie that begins with that genius opening scene in Shanghai with the diamond and antidote (superb depiction of humorous action) and ends with the... removing of the heart.
The film more humorous and self-satirizing than any other Indiana Jones, as also preposterous in some of its action scenes, maintains a vivid character, a catchy charm and a farce element. People who took the film for serious failed to see any of its attractive qualities. Some even went so far as to say that the depiction of goddess Kali was untruthful and insulting. That gloriously shows that some people can't distinguish the difference between a documentary and a fairy tale. Temple Of Doom is a classic popcorn movie. It's so popcorn that gets ridiculous after some point. And that's where the beauty of the movie can be found. Indiana Jones was never the serious type with the flamboyant bravado. He was and always will be a quirky character that balances between the serious and totally absurd. And that's the only way to be fully understood. Any other interpretation is like failing to understand the soul of the character and the movie itself.
